The HIV/AIDS epidemic has affected persons in all sex, age and racial/ethnic groups in Vermont. This effect, however, has not been the same for all groups. In the beginning of the epidemic the number of cases of HIV infection increased most sharply among white MSM. Although white men who have sex with men (MSM) are still disproportionately affected by the epidemic, recent national trends suggest a shift in the HIV/AIDS epidemic toward women, blacks, and high-risk heterosexual adults. It is important to identify the populations in Vermont that are most affected and are most at risk for HIV infection to better plan HIV prevention and care efforts, as well as to help effectively allocate limited resources.

It is imperative that Vermonters recognize that HIV/AIDS is here and it is important to be educated about the behaviors that could put them at risk of contracting the disease. HIV and AIDS are a part of many Vermonters lives and although Vermont is a low prevalence state there are new positives every year. It’s estimated that as many as one out of every four people infected with HIV in the US does not know that they are infected with HIV.
