How to get tested

Testing room

When the next available tester is ready and it's your turn to be tested you will be asked to enter one of our testing rooms.

Anonymous number

Once inside the testing room your tester will start by giving you a testing number. We use this number to identify your test, because again, our tests are anonymous: you do not give your name. Your tester will then detail how the testing session will go. They will ask if you have any questions about the testing process or HIV in general. Our testers are well versed in current HIV/AIDS and STD information. Remember, everything you discuss with the tester is confidential.

Form

When your questions have been answered your tester will ask you some demographic questions. Some of these may cover sensitive topics so if you don't feel comfortable answering, just say "Pass."

Next the tester will go over the consent form with you. If you consent to being tested, he/she will ask you to print the date on the form thus providing Vermont CARES with the consent to test you while protecting your anonymity.

Rapid HIV Test

Now it's time for the test. Vermont CARES uses the Oraquick Advance Rapid HIV Test. Your tester will open the test packet and ask you to pull out the actual test. The test is an oral swab that collects an oral mucosal transudate sample (oral fluid) from the inside of your mouth. Don't worry, this doesn't hurt at all.

If you have no other questions, your tester will take your test to our testing station and start the test. It takes 20 minutes for the test to run and determine the result. During this time you are welcome to sit in our waiting area, go for a walk, talk on your phone, etc.

When your test is complete and your tester has verified the results they will call your number in the waiting area.

Because we always want to protect your privacy, your tester will ask you to step back into one of our testing rooms. This happens for everyone, regardless of the result.

Your tester will promptly give you the result of your test.

At this point you're welcome to ask your tester any question you may have thought of while waiting for your result. Testers have information and referrals regarding all STDs.
