HIV infection can be prevented. Learn how to stay safe

Definitions:

  • HIV = Human Immunodeficiency Virus
  • AIDS = Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
    *HIV is the virus that causes AIDS

Fluids which transmit HIV:

  • Semen (the fluid from a penis, also known as cum or ejaculate. Semen can also contain sperm.)
  • Vaginal fluid (the wet secretion of a vagina)
  • Blood (can also include a woman's period blood from her menstrual cycle.)
  • Breast milk
Activities that can transmit HIV:
  • Unprotected vaginal, anal, oral sex
  • Sharing needles (for injecting drugs or other substances)
  • Childbirth and/or breastfeeding

Ways to prevent getting HIV:

How is HIV transmitted?
  • Avoid any sexual activities where semen, vaginal fluids or blood are exchanged with another person (unprotected)
  • Avoid using any drugs, especially injecting any type of drug
  • Avoid sharing drugs, needles or other works
  • Use a new condom or female condom with every vaginal or anal sex act
  • Use a new barrier, such as a condom, dam or saran wrap with every oral sex act
  • Use a new needle each time when injecting drugs
  • Clean a needle with a bleach kit when injecting drugs (if a new needle is not available)
  • Avoid all contact with another person's blood
  • Avoid any sexual activity when drunk or high
Fluids which DO NOT transmit HIV:
  • Saliva
  • Sweat
  • Tears
  • Mucus/snot
  • Urine
  • Fecal matter (poop)
    **If any of these fluids are bloody, HIV could be present**
