Casual Contact and Non-Transmission Fluids
HIV: Human Immunodeficiency Virus AIDS: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
There are four fluids that HIV can be transmitted through: 1. Semen 2. Vaginal Fluid 3. Blood 4. Breast Milk
Casual Contact and Non-Tranmission Fluid HIV cannot be transmitted through and fluids other than the four mentioned above (semen, vaginal fluid, blood or breast milk). Fluids that cannot transmit HIV include, but are not limited to; sweat, tears, saliva, mucous, urine or fecal matter. However if there is blood present in any of these fluids transmission could occur.
In order for HIV transmission to occur HIV must be present, i.e. one person in any given risk scenario must be infected with the HIV. HIV can be transmitted through unprotected sexual contact such as vaginal or anal sex. HIV can also be passed from a person who has it to someone who does not through sharing works used to inject intravenous drugs. HIV can also be transmitted from an adult to a child through breast milk or during childbirth. For more specific information or questions please call Vermont CARES at 1-800-649-2437 and ask to speak with an HIV Program Specialist.
Sexual Contact The most common method for preventing HIV transmission through sexual contact is using a barrier such as a condom. When used correctly condoms are the most effective method for preventing HIV transmission through sexual contact. Intravenous drug use Whenever possible new injection works should be used. If the needle is unused, and no previously inject material is flushed into the need before it is used there is not risk of transmission. For a list of Vermont Needle Exchange sites click HERE. If unused needles are not available cleaning the works with a bleach kit can kill the HIV. Bleach kits are available at all Vermont CARES offices. Blood to blood contact If you come into contact with blood Universal Precautions should be followed. Click HERE for a list of such precautions.
